Retail Associate Foundations
How a legal retail floor actually runs: roles, guest flow, and product categories you can explain without guessing.

Lesson 1 · the shop
Four stops on an adult-use floor
This is a licensed cannabis counter, not a general store. In New York the ID check happens before the purchase, the case stays closed, and the limit on the wall is the limit.
- 01
Vestibule
21+ ID before they see the case.
- 02
Sales floor
One associate stays with that guest.
- 03
The case
Flower, pre-roll, vape, edible. Still sealed.
- 04
Register
Posted adult-use limit, then the exit bag.
Lesson 2 · the case
What you are allowed to explain
Name the format, the onset, and the number printed on that package. Do not promise how it will feel.
Flower
Inhaled. Faster onset. Read the THC on the jar.
Jar stays closed.
Pre-roll
Same as flower, already packed.
Do not light it.
Vape
Inhaled. The number that matters is on the cartridge.
No sample hit.
Edible
Slower onset. Talk serving size, not a feeling.
Package stays sealed.
Lesson 3 · the line
Cannabis talk vs. medical talk
A budtender can
- Read THC and CBD off the label in front of them.
- Compare flower, pre-rolls, vapes, edibles, and beverages.
- Point a new guest at a lower number on the package.
- Tell them to store it away from children and pets.
A budtender cannot
- Say a product treats, cures, or prevents a condition.
- Give advice from their health, medications, or pregnancy.
- Sell to anyone under 21, or past the posted limit.
- Let them open a jar or consume cannabis in the shop.
That split is how New York adult-use retail is taught. Other states keep the split and change the posted limit. Training, not legal advice.
Lesson 4 · stop
Three reasons the sale dies
Not 21
The ID is missing, expired, or the face does not match.
Over the limit
This sale would pass the purchase limit posted at the register.
Open it here
They want to smell, open, or consume it in the shop.
Stop. The lead takes the counter.
What you will be able to do
- Open and close a shift using the shop’s floor routine
- Describe major product categories in plain, accurate language
- Hand a guest to a manager when a question is out of policy
